Here, for the first time that we can remember, a band interviews itself in HM, and who better to do that than the multi- faceted personalities that are Poor Old Lu? Eavesdrop on them from an ajoining table at a little Austin coffee shop as they discuss their music, ministry and a bunch of other stuff with HM's Brian McGovern.

Aaron -- "Scott, tell me about the new record. What do you think about the lyrical content as far as, you know, how it pertains to the rest of the Poor Old Lu albums that you've written the lyrics to?"

Scott -- "This album was more . . . well, just because of the way the album was written. Lyrically, it was almost completely written in the studio. It's not quite as worked out. I didn't get to go back and check out things and make sure it was politically correct, and like really, really cool, and Christian and stuff. And so, in that sense, it's probably a little more dark and confusing. But in the other sense, I think I allowed more for God to just take what He wanted to take and make something out of it. I think I'll go back and look at the album in a couple months and go, 'Wow!' and God will really move me with what He wrote in it. So, pertaining to the other albums, I would say it's a bit more dark, a bit more emotional, certainly a lot more personal. But, just like all the albums, I just think that the stuff that I go through is stuff that anybody could go through."

Scott -- "What do you think about the bass content vs. the other albums?"

Nick -- "There's a lot more bass lines on this one."

Jesse -- "You did a lot of bass lines . . ."

Nick -- "I got a lot of bass lines on this one."

Scott -- "You got like one per song, didn't you?"

Nick -- "Yup. Sometimes two per song."

Aaron -- "So Jesse. What do you think about the differences between your drum stylings on the new album, and albums of old?"

Jesse -- "A lot more parafenudilydiddles."

Nick -- "So Aaron, how does it feel being the natural leader?"

Aaron -- "Well, in being the natural leader of you boys, it's nice, 'cause God's really given me those gifts and abilities to be able to keep you guys in line, you know, being out on the road, you guys tend to get a little crazy and wild. I've gotta smack your heads together and keep you in line. What do you think about me being the natural leader, Nick?"

Nick -- "I think it's really funny, all of those things that you just said. You know that Jesse's the natural leader, always making sure that we're on time, getting us up in the mornings."

Scott -- "I've got a question for Nick. Nick, what's the craziest thing that's happened on this tour?"

Nick -- "Probably when you guys froze my underwear. That was crazy."

Jesse -- "What's it like knowing you're gonna be a dad?"

Nick -- "It's kinda crazy and kinda rad. It hasn't really totally hit me yet, probably. I'm just kinda stoked. But as soon as you start seeing the product, you know, of a baby, I'll start going, you know, 'I can't believe that there's a baby in there!'"

Aaron -- "When is your wife due, Nick?"

Nick -- "January 14. It's gonna be crazy."

Nick -- "So Scott, what's it like knowing that you are a baby?"

Scott -- (laughter)You ask me a question, Jesse, besides 'What does it feel like for me to be a baby?'"

Jesse -- "I just want to know how -- and I'm serious about this. I don't want you to laugh -- how you handle the pressures of being away from your cat. because I miss that cat a lot. I do. I know it plays a good role in keeping your wife company. How does that make you feel?"

Scott -- "Well, I know that my cat is keeping my side of the bed warm when I'm not there. the cat's taking care of my wife. My wife gets pretty lonely."

Jesse -- "Life on the road can be an inconvenience. What's something, when you go away from the tour that you feel is beneficial?"

Scott -- "Tours can pretty much be a bummer a lot of the time, because they can seem so glamorous, but they really are difficult and a pain. But I think one of the coolest things is getting out there and meeting people, getting to hang out, talk, pray, minister to people, whatever. I know one of the big things that I take away from it is just getting to hang out with these guys here, with the other bands, joking around, talking, travelling, whatever. It's just, it's like being in high school, hanging out with your friends during the summer or something. It's obviously different, because it's a lot more stressful, but it's kinda that same feeling, so it's fun."

Jesse -- "Aaron cut his hair yesterday, by the way. He doesn't look like Mr. Mom anymore. I enjoy road stuff in the fact that it is really hard, and I kind of like that aspect of it, because it kinda helps me . . . I think it's when we go through stuff like that, that we grow more. It's just kind of a family situation too, even away from our families."

Aaron -- "Jesse, Where do you see the music going for the next record? Where do you see it? Don't think about one of the other bands. Where do you see the direction of the music?"

Jesse -- "Uh, there's one of two options. One, I see it going back to the good old days of Poor Old Lu. Or, I see you guys letting me write more of the songs."

Nick -- ". . . and me writing all the drum parts?"

Jesse -- "Yeah, that might work. Usually, whenever we try to start with an idea with what we want, it doesn't work. We just write it, and whatever happens, happens. So, that's the second thing."

Aaron -- "So Scott, how do you, as a band, Poor Old Lu, usually go about writing your songs?"

Scott -- "How do I as a band?"

Aaron -- "How does Poor Old Lu . . .?"
