MxPx - Back to school, 2000
Since it's "back to school" time, we thought we'd ask a few artists to share some of their schooltime memories...
Yuri Ruley - MxPx
1. Tell us some of your school memories. (not limited to, but specifically those first few back to school days in the fall)
The two main things that I remember from high school are: 1. Playing in the school band and all the trips that we took, and 2. Getting in trouble for not paying attention in class.
2. How'd you deal with popularity and cliques?
I never really did the clique thing. I had my good friends and I had acquaintances from almost every group of people.
3. Tell us about the "awkward" days, before you were cool, confident, and/or established.
I think that all of junior high would count as my awkward days. I just got messed with a lot. People are really petty and stupid at that age.
4. Tell us about your extracurricular activities and accomplishments (sports, clubs, titles, etc.)
I think my major extracurricular is obvious. But I also played in the school band as well as in MxPx.
5. What teacher was "outtogetyou," and why; or tell us about your favorite teacher, and why.
I had a couple of teachers that really challenged me and kept my attention. Mr. Sweet - History, grade 11. And, of course, my band teacher -- Mr. Duenow, I have never learned so much in such a little time. Plus, he accepted my skydiving invite, and you have to be extra cool to want to do that with one of your students.
6. Advice you have for students this year.
Respect your teachers and learn as much as you can from them. And kick your butt and do as good as you can no matter what. I didn't and I regret it. Mike Herrera - MxPx

Yuri and I used to sneak out of his house at night and skate into town. We would skate all night and in the process do what we could to leave our mark around town. Little did we know that his mom knew the whole time, and said we should just use the front door from then on. After that, it wasn't as fun, cause sneaking out was half the fun.
2. How'd you deal with popularity and cliques?
I had a couple [of] friends and was fine with it. I knew people, but was only good friends with a few guys.
3. Tell us about the "awkward" days, before you were cool, confident, and/or established.
Well, I was always the guy almost cool enough to hang out with the big kids, but never really fit in. Also, I was on the poor side, too. Nothing too dramatic. I think Junior high was worse for that sort of thing.
4. Tell us about your extracurricular activities and accomplishments (sports, clubs, titles, etc.)
Well, in Junior high, I played baseball in 7th grade and I wrestled (yes, I wore one of those skinny little outfits; go ahead and laugh). I had wrestled in peewee wrestling, so I continued in Junior high. When I hit high school, I had started MxPx, so that's all I did through high school. I also was on the debate team, but I could never go to the tourneys, because we usually had shows on the weekend.
5. What teacher was "outtogetyou," and why; or tell us about your favorite teacher, and why.
My favorite teachers were the ones that didn't care what you did. I had a couple [with whom] I could just leave class and ditch school and they wouldn't even pay attention. Ditching class got really easy by my Senior year.
6. Advice you have for students this year.
Enjoy life no matter where you are in yours. Check out the song "Educated Guess." It's on our new album.
Chili - 3rd Root
1. Tell us some of your school memories. (not limited to, but specifically those first few back to school days in the fall)
I spent most of the time staring out of the window waiting to ditch and also sleeping in class and dreaming about waves and surfing.
2. How'd you deal with popularity and cliques?
I just loved everybody and tried to keep it real.
3. Tell us about your extracurricular activities and accomplishments (sports, clubs, titles, etc.)
I used to bodyboard all the time with Wuvy (P.O.D.).
4. What teacher was "outtogetyou," and why; or tell us about your favorite teacher, and why.
Mr. Griffin was out to get me, 'cuz I slept in his class. Mr Parr was my favorite teacher, 'cuz he always pushed me really hard in art class.
5. Advice you have for students this year.
Don't sleep in class -- I had a friend that got kicked in the head because he was sleeping. But anyway, as awkward as it sounds, do what [your] mom and dad say as far as school and life . . . in the end you will understand why. Just trust in God.
