JC-TV Anniversary

JC-TV 1st Anniversary Party
January 20, 2004
Report by Dan MacIntosh

ONTARIO, CA – JC-TV celebrated its one-year anniversary with a party at Van’s Skatepark in Ontario, California, which was attended by various musicians, comedians, clergy and assorted industry insiders. But instead of balloons and streamers, this sprawling party locale was decorated with speeding skateboarders and jumping bicyclists. And when contrasted with Christian television’s mostly conservative history, it made perfect sense to celebrate this adventurous new television outlet at an extreme sports venue.

If you haven’t seen it yet, JC-TV is a faith-based network that primarily focuses on music videos, but also makes room for relevant talk shows, extreme sports, reality shows and game shows. It’s an outgrowth of the Trinity Broadcasting Network, which explains the presence of various Paul and Jan Crouch children and grandchildren at this celebratory get together.

The evening’s entertainment was eclectic, to say the least, with musical sounds ranging from Dogwood’s punkish charm, to Out Of Eden’s soulful grooves. Rapper T Bone, wearing a Portland Trailblazers jersey, was tonight’s MC, as he playfully introduced the various performers and generally spiked the overall energy level. He also got the house hopping with a little of his own hip-hop style. Other musical highlights included three songs by the newly Coldplay-esque Plus One. This band earned extra credit points for having one its axe men dressed in a Joy Division t-shirt. Honestly, when was the last time you saw that band’s name on Christian television? Before Out Of Eden got its groove on, Danielle Kimmey – one third of this O.O.E. Sisterhood -- admitted to digging emo and hardcore music. Somebody please get that girl an electric guitar!

For a few brief moments, it seemed as though this JC-TV shindig had morphed into (Christian) Comedy Central, due to the presence of Christian comics Bob Smiley and Nazareth (the man, not the classic rock band). Apologetix, which describes itself as a cross between Billy Graham and Weird Al, recently scored a radio hit with “Look Yourself” (a parody of Eminem’s “Loose Yourself”) and nicely combined its levity with loud rock music.

If nothing else, JC-TV’s success is proof-positive that cyber audio hasn’t killed the video star quite yet. You really oughta want your JC-TV.
