Hi Thanks for your inquiry about interning at HM Magazine. We have had some great experiences with interns here (and we think all the interns have had a great time as well). Our goal is to give each intern a well-rounded perspective of what it takes to put out a magazine. He or she will get their hands in each area of the magazine -- from writing, proofing, editing to layout, design and customer service, circulation as well as marketing and advertising. We also like to "customize" each internship to weigh their duties and experience in one direction or another based on their gifts. (For example, if they really like writing or graphic design, we'll give them more assignments in those areas over others) Here is some basic information about interning at HM: When: All year 'round. We like to have interns that work with us full-time (8-5) and who work at least one 2-month cycle (since our magazine comes out every two months, it gives the best perspective if you can see one whole cycle -- from inception thru deadline). However, we are flexible. We've had interns that come in a couple hours a few days a week, a couple hours each weekday, to 8 hour days five days a week. So, whatever your situation is, we are more than happy to work around it. Where: Our office is in Pflugerville, Texas. 6307 Cele Road #573, to be exact. For further info on the area, check out www.austin360.com How Much: At this point in time, all of our internships are unpaid. We've had paid internships before, but our current budget will not allow any at this time. Where Do I Stay: If you are coming in from out of town to do this internship, we will endeavor to find housing for you. We've been able to do this several times, and we've also found interns who happen to have relatives or friends in Austin. BUT most of our recent interns either found roommates or had the funds to afford temporary housing in apartments, etc. What Do I Learn: This is the exciting part. We want to give you a FULL, well-rounded idea of what it takes to put out a magazine. You will find yourself: writing, editing, proofreading, laying out articles, arranging interviews for freelance writers, assigning stories, working with publicists on stories and requesting photos, taking photos, reviewing albums, reviewing concerts, assisting our Advertising Director with Indie Band contacts, compiling and checking advertisement film and files, following up on advertisement insertions, helping with promotional mail-outs, graphic design, website design, marketing strategies, mailng list management assistance, transcribing interviews, sorting photographs, calling retail stores, and more. We truly hope to give you a broad perspective of what it takes to put out a magazine. Who: We can give you email addresses of previous interns, so you can get unbiased feedback on what an internship experience is like.
