Last Wish Granted
Twenty-one-year old Trinidad native Ronell Ragbir, a terminal cancer patient whose final wish was to perform her gospel songs in front of a live audience, passed away June 7 at 1 p.m. at the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Her funeral was held Sunday, June 10 in Memphis. Though her young life was marked by poverty, difficult circumstances and shattered dreams, Ronell’s remarkable spirit and indomitable faith brought light and hope to all who met her. Her March 22 concert at Colonial Hills Church in Southhaven, Miss., aptly dubbed A Celebration of Life, was opened by Dove Award winning singer/songwriter Ginny Owens and attended by more than 1,500 supporters. Gospel music veteran Bruce Carroll performed in Ronell's band and assisted the young woman in crafting a six-song EP inspired by her journey. After attending Ronell’s funeral, Owens said, "Several hundred friends came to celebrate Ronell's life -- doctors, nurses, hospital volunteers, friends and some family. The amazing thing was that most of us had only known Ronell during her suffering. Yet we were drawn together by her beautiful strength of character, faith in God, and hope for a time when the pain would be no more." Ronell arrived at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. in April 2004 and was diagnosed with bone cancer. After multiple surgeries, a leg amputation, chemotherapy and radiation, the cancer persisted and metastasized throughout her body. When treatments were no longer deemed effective, Owens, Carroll, Rocketown Records President Don Donahue and a team of Memphis volunteers pulled together to grant Ronell's final wish, to perform her original gospel songs in concert. During the March 22 concert, Ronell related the inspiration behind the EP's title track, "Say Amen," noting how it perfectly summarized her life’s journey. Regardless of what life threw at her, Ronell was determined to say amen to God and to His plan, acknowledging that His will was for the best.
Here’s a piece from one of Ronell's songs:
"Now I’ve faced many troubles in my lifetime/And I’ve heard death knocking at my door/And in my soul I felt great desperation/To be rescued from life’s storms/So I called upon the precious name of Jesus/And still today, He always pulls me through/When I’m in my darkest hour/On my knees I find great power/When I say amen to God in all I do."
Tom Bowen, founder of the Childhood Cancer Network and a long-time friend of Ronell, will be making the EP available for sale soon on his organizations Web site.

news mae.JPG
Mae Releases Third Album on Capitol Records
The third album from Norfolk, Virginia quintet Mae, Singularity', will be released on Capitol Records on August 14, 2007. This will be the band's first disc for a major label following two records for indie Tooth & Nail. The opening track on Singularity', "Brink of Disaster" kicks off with a snare crack that leads into a number that's both poignant and accessible, see-sawing between an echoing, melancholy verse and an explosive chorus that melds churning guitars, warbling keys and vocals made for rock radio. "Just Let Go" is more wistful and reflective, but still glistens with hope. And the album's first single "Sometimes I Can't Make it Alone" rides a tumbling backbeat and a ragged riff into a euphoric number about the strength that comes from relying on others. Before the releasing of Singularity' Mae will tour with The Fray and OK Go, starting June 11 in Minneapolis, Minnesota and running through July 1 in Maryland Heights, Missouri (see dates below).

Huh??...Newsboys Again?
Following the success of newsboys: remixed in 2002, and on the heels of their latest record GO, comes a new remix album, Go | Remixed. "I have always loved remix CDs," says singer Peter Furler. "They're like one of those TV makeover shows: you give the words and melody a new jacket and shoes, the rhythm a nip n' tuck, and send it out on the dance floor." Including radio hits "Wherever We Go," and "Something Beautiful," the songs on Go | Remixed are the imaginative work of producers Tedd T. (MuteMath, newsboys, tobymac, Rebecca St. James, Stacie Orrico, ZOEgirl), Max Hsu (Superchick, tobymac, VeggieTales, ThumpMonks), Lee Bridges (India. Are) and Jeff Frankenstein of newsboys.

Take A Chance On Something Beautiful
Brash Music has announced the July 10 national release of Take A Chance On Something Beautiful from South Carolina-based band Half Past Forever. The group's permanent members Chris Sligh (vocals, guitars), Adam Fisher (guitars), and Cole Edmonson (bass) were joined by several other musicians for the project. Sligh produced the album and wrote or co-wrote each of the project's seventeen songs.

Doll House Adds Tiebreaker to the Family
Tiebreaker (aka John LaMonica) began making atmospheric and experimental acoustic music in 2001. With just one official EP, How Shall They Hear?, and a number of online demos to speak of, Tiebreaker is finally presenting us with the full length opus A Minor Miracle out this summer on Doll House. Over the past decade, John LaMonica has played an integral role in the bands My Spacecoaster, Death At Sea and The Polyphonic Spree. He's paid his dues and shared stages with David Bowie, The Flaming Lips, Cursive, Radiohead, Interpol, Pedro The Lion, and Grandaddy to name a few. With A Minor Miracle, John takes center stage presenting song after song of pure, electro-acoustic bliss.

Rebecca St. James Joins Todd Agnew
A song teaming that holds the promise of being a defining 'vocal event of the year' in contemporary Christian music finds EMI's Rebecca St. James joining vocally in the studio with Todd Agnew on a powerful new single rendition of "Our Great God" -written by Mac Powell of Third Day - and now being added at AC Christian radio nationally. The track will be included in Agnew's much anticipated new album Better Questions, launching in July from INO Records. "For me this was such a natural thing. Todd has been a real friend since we toured together about four years ago and he simply called me one day and said, 'Hey, Rebecca-what do you think about the idea of doing a duet together?' I was immediately into the idea and even more so when I heard the song.I have such a passion for worship-as does Todd-and working together on 'Our Great God' represents a wonderful outpouring of our friendship."

news ruth614.JPG
Find Out What's Behind Ruth
Since age fifteen, in the late 1990's, Dustin had been strumming his guitar, writing songs, developing his craft until he would have the opportunity to try his hand as career artist. As his high school tenure began drawing to a close, he began to realize that opportunity was scarce in his hometown of Portland, Oregon. So he did what few in his position would have the guts to do: Wide-eyed and filled with optimism, he moved to Los Angeles, with only his guitar and an eager attitude. It would be the classic tale that so many have shared in the City of Angels.

"My journey to L.A. was a very important learning experience. After the initial shock of a severe case of homesickness, it was a very freeing time in my life. It seemed as thought there were no fences or borders. In retrospect, God had his hand around me the whole time. Yeah, I landed a few shows, but little came of it. I spent a year there, but began wanting more out of the music. I wanted to be in a rock'n'roll band and play the electric guitar. But I did learn quite a bit about the music business, even if it was through falling on my face quite a bit. I decided to come back home and start over with the knowledge I gained."

Upon arriving home, Dustin began looking for answers in the wrong places. After several months of "jamming" with friends and forming a new band, he soon found himself soiled in the world. He was surrounded by group of people pursuing an empty dream: partying, drugs, purposelessness, and a path to an empty existence. He knew there had to be something more. It was then that a close friend clued him into a different way. A better way.

"After years of trying on my own, I decided to commit my plans to God, to submit my life to The Lord, and stop living without purpose inside my goals. It took a couple years but I found a committed group of guys who wanted the same thing. At this point in my writing I was starting to feel like the songs were ready for the world to hear. From there, it seemed like all the doors opened. I blinked, and we were playing shows and releasing an EP. It sold a couple
thousand copies and we started showcasing for labels. It wasn't long before we found ourselves on Tooth and Nail, right where we needed to be, with a huge opportunity to get the music out to many people."

Recently off a tour with label mates Falling Up, Ruth will play over 200 shows in 2007. In June and July, Ruth joins the Emery tour for 25 dates across the nation. The band has already played dates this year with Fireflight, Seventh Day Slumber, Leeland, Run Kid Run, Lost Ocean, and The Send as well.

"Ruth is an acronym for Return Us To Him. That being said, the hope is that this music could help steer hearts in the right direction. I have learned through my experiences that without an alignment of your dreams God's plan for your life, you will run into walls. God puts the desires of your heart there for His glory hence the title "Secondhand Dreaming". Music is a very powerful thing. It stimulates more than just emotions and thoughts--it can really move someone, it can really change who someone is. If nothing else, I know these songs helped steer my heart in the right direction."

Ruth, will release their debut album Secondhand Dreaming on Tooth & Nail Records this coming June 26th.

The Fray's Singer Could Inherit $15 Million London Home
According to the Rocky Mountain News, Sir Benjamin Slade, an English aristocrat with a lavish 13th century mansion that boasts three lakes, a ballroom and hundreds of cattle - but lacks one key feature: an heir. After an 18-month search for a relative to inherit his $15 million home, Sir Benjamin Slade, a childless baronet, has found an unlikely candidate: a rock star from Colorado. Isaac Slade, front man with The Fray, a Denver band that enjoys success on both sides of the Atlantic, contacted Sir Benjamin and jetted in for a two-day visit, trading sweat- soaked clubs for strolls through the picturesque 150 acres of grounds. "He could be the answer to our dream," Sir Benjamin said. "He doesn't drink much, he doesn't smoke, he doesn't do drugs - he's not your typical rocker. Better still, he and his wife want to start a family, which is just what this house needs." Sir Benjamin's search for an heir came to light in December 2005 when The Daily Telegraph quoted him as saying that the Discovery Channel had "tracked down 5,000 Slades in America." Worried that the estate, called Mausel House, faced an uncertain future and growing weary of the costs of running it - it has a $2,000 monthly heating bill alone - he launched his search for relatives. "(Isaac) was terribly impressed by the place and is a thoroughly great chap," Sir Benjamin said. "Isaac's a big strapping guy, and his grandfather was a cowpoke - so he'd be more than able to handle the cattle." Sir Benjamin said he suspected the singer is descended from relatives in central England, who founded the prestigious Slade School of Fine Art at University College London. news fightback.JPG
Fight Back
Champion Recordings is headed up by Ryan Conley, who many know as the drummer for the now defunct Tooth and Nail rock band Terminal. He is now drumming for Solid State outfit Oh, Sleeper as well as running things at his own label. Champion's first release is a 2-disc compilation to benefit the Invisible Children organization. It's entitled Fight Back! and features several veterans of heavy music with some well-known indie rock artists. It mixes them with some great up and coming artists from such labels as Champion, Doll House, Blood & Ink, Scotoma, and more. According to Ryan Conley, by purchasing this record you are directly fighting some of the atrocities that plague our globe; namely, in the northern part of Uganda and part of Sudan. Children are being ripped from their homes and kidnapped by a rebel terrorist paramilitary group infamously known as The Lord's Resistance Army (LRA). The group is engaged in an armed rebellion against the Ugandan government in what is now one of Africa's longest running conflicts. The LRA is accused of widespread human rights violations, including mutilation, torture, rape, and the abduction of children. With combined efforts we can firmly make a stand and fight for those that are too weak. 30% of the wholesale cost of this compilation will go to Invisible Children, an organization that is devoted to raising awareness and ending this massacre of human decency. For more information and a track listing go here.

Red Makes A Mark
Red’s current single at mainstream radio, “Breathe Into Me”, has launched in to the Top 10 at Active Rock Radio, currently No. 10, on the heels of Saliva, Sevendust and Nickelback. Responding to its current radio success, Red bassist, Randy Armstrong shared, “I seriously can’t believe what is happening with our music, especially ‘Breathe Into Me’. The dreams we all have continue to come true and to look at the radio charts and see our name in there is unreal. We can’t thank all of our supporters enough.” Red’s current radio single at Christian Rock Radio, “Break Me Down”, is No. 2 on the R&R Rock Chart, and No. 9 on the CRW Rock Chart.

Shred Your Face Off
For their first video, The Showdown brought in Doug Spangenberg, who has directed videos for Norma Jean, Terror, amd Lamb of God. Filmed on the same grounds used by MTV’s Jackass crew, the video will reflect the band’s 80s style and features some serious explosions!! The video for 'Temptation Come My Way' will give a television audience their first official look at the South’s high-voltage rockers. Frontman David Bunton says, “This music video captures the true spirit and feel of The Showdown. No holds barred, heavy metal, pyro, and headbanging. That’s what we’re all about. The goal for our first video was to give people a small taste of how rude we can be live. Heavy metal is plugged in and loud. Heavy metal is the law.” To match their heavy metal sound, the band incorporated pyrotechnics. “I was amped on the song as soon as I heard it,” says Spangenberg. “We kept it simple and shot the band shredding their faces off in a field with a (bleep)load of pyro. In retrospect, I'm surprised they made it out with only light singe marks. They're great dudes, and I look forward to barbequing with them this summer on Ozzfest.” Catch the video on The Showdown's Myspace.

news thesend.JPG
The Send Sending You Cosmos
In 2006 Joe Kisselburgh left his previous outfit, Falling Up, and began to pursue his ultimate musical end--which was becoming a songwriter, lyricist, frontman and musical conduit. This pursuit is called The Send. And so the journey began for Kisselburgh, armed only with an idea. The name, the Send, is a reference to the progression of the thought from his mind and soul to his music and finally to the listener. But even though the band was essentially brand new, the songs themselves had been a long time in coming. While on the road with his former outfit (and even well before), he stole away to write every chance he got.
