We're privileged to have been invited on a blogger's tour of what Compassion International is doing in Uganda. "It should come as no surprise, of course, that I'll be blogging about it just about every step of the way," relates Van Pelt. Stay tuned at the Editor's Blog section at hmmag.com

Eric Volz Released From Prison
Eric will be on television this week (tomorrow and Friday). These will be his first TV interviews since being released from Nicaraguan prison:
Thursday Morning – NBC The Today Show – LIVE
Thursday Night – CNN Anderson Cooper 360 (general update on the case)
Friday Night – CNN Anderson Cooper 360 (more in-depth story)

Here's a message he recently sent out:
"I'm sorry it's taken so long to send a message, but this is the first chance I've had to get this information out. The good news is that I actually typed this update directly into a computer, instead of passing hand-written letters to my attorney which were then scanned and emailed to my support team, transcribed, typed, and blasted to the support network. I will to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for your taking time out of your busy lives to follow this story. The many different ways you all showed support during the past 13 months contributed directly to my release. There is no way I could ever express my appreciation, gratitude, and wonder for this passionate community that has rallied for my freedom. I am very fortunate!! Unfortunately, I am not celebrating my release. In fact, this is far from over! As you will see when you read the Declaration of New Facts (in Spanish & English) now posted on the web sites, my freedom has yet to be restored. The need for your continued involvement to secure justice remains: the Sandinista government is trying to overturn my release; and in order to divert attention from the fact that some of Doris' murderers are still free, are searching for another scapegoat on which to place blame. I am still in hiding due to continued death threats. Though I haven't yet recovered physically, I must continue to fight! As an emerging community of ethically-motivated people who have gravitated to this story, you provide me the endurance and purpose to be fully committed to my ultimate responsibility: the pursuit of justice.
With love,
Eric V."

Rock With A Rock Star At Special Camp
“An all access pass to a total music experience," best describes the unique concept of Camp Electric, a ground breaking Christian worship and rock & roll summer music camp being hosted for youth aged 13-18, at Trevecca University in Nashville, June 29th-July 3rd. (Trevecca University, by the way, is where HM used to host its annual "Artist vs. Industry" Flag Football game each year during GMA week...) ‘Inter-action’ is the key emphasis at Camp Electric-- an event targeted to bring a unique mix of nightly concerts by top Christian rock bands, and top Christian musicians to teach instructional sessions. The ‘all access’ schedule will offer five power packed days of hands-on music/ministry instruction, worship, personalized tips and tune-ups, and overall encouragement to spiritual and performance excellence for young musicians seeking to perfect their skills on vocals, keyboards, drums, bass, and guitar. Camp registrants will have ample informally organized ‘hang time’ with their professional instructors as well as the opportunity to personally jam with their favorite musicians. Major chart topping groups set to perform in the nightly concert presentations include TobyMac, Skillet, Pillar, Leeland, Phil Joel, Britt Nicole, and a to-be-announced ‘mystery artist.’ Leading Christian author/youth minister, David Nasser, will also be on campus to speak at the event. Camp Electric is being produced by The Premier Group, America’s top producer of Christian themed events, and presented by K-LOVE and Air 1 Radio, the leading voice of Christian radio under the EMF Broadcasting banner. Noting that the event is filling up fast, John Sanders of Camp Electric, comments: "We’ve themed Camp Electric not only as a '‘first’ of its’ kind event, but with a strong commitment to Christian music that will give aspiring young musicians an opportunity to maximize their individual potential as well as grow in their spiritual walk.” Adds Mike Novak, President of EMF’s radio family: “To raise future generations we have to invest in ways to reach kids where they are today. For many Camp Electric is a perfect example of how families can partner their teens with some of the leading Christian artists in the world. The opportunity for these young people to learn and fine tune their musical skills in a Godly environment is priceless.” Camp Electric will be conducted as a full-on ‘campus experience.’ The five days of activities will be totally staged onsite at Nashville Trevecca University campus and will be staffed with adult chaperones. Accomodations are available on campus for the first 500 registrants. Instructors include some of the top road/studio musicians in today’s Christian market, hand picked by event presenters for their passion for teaching, modeling Christianity through communication in music, and keeping God central in their personal lives and roles within the music industry as professional musicians.

Hawk Nelson Hawks Green Shirts
Hawk Nelson credits their avid fans for their successful career that has sold more than a half-million units and landed them in major films and appearances throughout the past four years. In honor of their fans, Hawk Nelson's forthcoming album will be a tribute to their friends titled HAWK NELSON IS MY FRIEND, which releases April 1st. In anticipation of Hawk's third studio project, fans will get a chance to purchase a special bundle through Music Today starting January 16th that will include a concert ticket, pre-order of the new CD, and special edition green t-shirt. This special offer will be for those rabid fans that want to be on the frontlines of this upcoming headline tour featuring Hawk Nelson and special guest Run Kid Run. The tour is partnered with Premier/Winter Jam for upcoming spring promotions during the Winter Jam Spectacular in addition to the Revolve Women of Faith and Dare 2 Share events. To purchase this bundle that is specially priced at $30, fans just need to go to HawkNelson.com and buy tickets to the Green T Tour in their respective city. With each ticket purchased, the fan will get an official Hawk Nelson Green T, which will be a special edition numbered shirt. Fans then wear the shirt on the day of the concert and receive upgraded admission and an entrance to an exclusive listening party with the band---but only if the fan wears the Green T. Fans are encouraged to get their tickets early, as they are only available to a limited group in each city (dates/markets below). The concept for their headline tour came from the upcoming album title and highly popular green t-shirt with the words Hawk Nelson Is My Friend. The t-shirt has been a part of the band's merchandise from day one and has become a staple with their fans. Hawk Nelson wanted to not only account their success to their loyal fanbase with the album title, but to give them a special tour with significance of the Green T. "It's not every year that you get to embark on your own headlining tour," shares bassist Daniel Biro. "Now after five steady years of filling the support slot, we have finally earned a loyal fan-base and can go out there and give back to them on our Green T Tour 2008. It's exciting and scary all at the same time! It's exciting because this marks a new chapter for us as Hawk Nelson, with the release of our third record. It's scary because you get all the responsibilities that come alongside with that. But I know that this is where God wants us right now, and that brings a lot of confidence going into this tour." Thrilled to be promoting the headline tour Mike Snider, President of Third Coast Artist Agency, shares, "First of all, by combining a free specialty item like the Green T when you pre-order the new CD and purchase a concert ticket is genius. I can't wait to see 25% of the crowd up front in a sea of green. Secondly, by cross promoting their headlining tour with the Winter Jam arena tour is a smart move. Especially since they were on the Winter Jam tour in the same cities the last two years. Thirdly, including Music Today to service the tickets, CD's and T Shirts takes the fan club to the next level. They may seem like goofy Canadians, but I think they are proving to be smarter than we think." Jumping into 2008 with a splash, Hawk Nelson's debut retail digital single ("A Friend Like That") from the new project is a hit with fans. The song first became available at the end of December and has already shot up to the No. 3 position on the iTunes Christian & Gospel Top Downloaded Songs. The song also went for adds last week at CHR radio coming out of the box with the most adds for the week at that format as well as becoming New and Active. "A Friend Like That" also was second most added at the Rock radio format.

Family Force 5 Hits Road For 22 Dates
With a non-stop momentum, crunk rock band Family Force 5 gears up for the 22-city heartsupport tour, a partnership with heartsupport ministry offering hope and practical resources to those struggling with addictions. The tour begins January 17th in Abilene, Texas and will also feature musical guests Falling Up, Spoken, and This Beautiful Republic. HeartSupport (heartsupport.com), a new organization started by Craig Gross (XXXchurch.com) and Jon Bell (Author Rob Bell's brother), offers an online community for people who are dealing with addictions, self-injury, depression, eating disorders, and suicide. The ministry believes everyone has a unique life story, that there is strength in numbers, and that others have walked down the same path before. Each stop on the tour run will feature Jon Bell Emceeing the show with HeartSupport videos in between music sets. Bell will give a private talkback session as well, offered during the first musical set to leaders of teens and college students alike, which aims to heighten awareness of the issues and give resources on how to deal with each struggle. HeartSupport will also set up a “Your Story Confessional” booth on site where concert attendees can go and share their personal stories and struggles. With an ever increasing fan popularity Family Force 5 swept the recent CCM Magazine Reader’s Choice Awards, earning them not only 7 category wins, but also the cover story of this month’s CCM. The band nabbed the honors for Best Artist, Best Band, Best Live Performance, Most Underrated Artist, Artist You’d Most Like to See on the Cover of CCM, Best Website, and finally Most Likely to be the Breakout Artist of 2008. This issue of CCM Magazine is significant as it featured 5 separate covers, (each of the five band members got their own cover photo) a first for the magazine since 2001’s dcTalk cover story. On their recent Dance, Rawr, Dance Tour, Family Force 5 awed over 16,000 people, and played 16 sold-out shows. That tour raised over $6,000 for Jedidiah’s Hope Collection Charity for the Invisible Children’s Fund. 2007 was also punctuated with an online Family Force 5 surge including 1,000,000 views of the band’s “Really Real” shows on You Tube, over 200,000 person community on the Family Force 5 MySpace site, and 8,000,000 online music plays. Fans can anticipate a new music video “Never Let Me Go”, as well as a new Rock radio single “Face Down”. Since their debut 2006 release Business Up Front, Party In The Back, Family Force 5 has been catapulted onto the music scene with a performance on CBS TV’s The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson, two performances on DIRECTV’s CD USA, music video play on MTVU.com, and a win as Yahoo! Music’s “Who’s Next” contest. The band’s debut has sold over 100,000 copies while racking up two #1 rock radio hits “Replace Me” and “Love Addict” at Christian radio. Family Force tours over 200 dates a year including 2006’s Journeys Backyard BBQ Tour, 2007’s Van’s Warped Tour and dates with TobyMac. Led by front man and guitarist Solomon Olds (aka Soul Glow Activator), Family Force 5 includes Solomon’s two brothers Jacob Olds (aka Crouton) on drums/vocal, and his twin Joshua Olds (aka Fatty) on bass/vocals. The force of five is rounded out by Nathan Currin (aka Nadaddy) on keyboard and Derek Mount (aka Chap Stique) on guitar.

Kevin Max and Stryper Share Stage At Benefit Show
Some of Christian music’s top artists will share the stage with rock & roll icons for a charity benefit concert on Monday, February 25th. Kevin Max and Stryper will join Tesla, Twisted Sister, Tom Scholz (Boston), Aaron Lewis (Staind) and others, along with host Dee Snider, for the 5th Anniversay Station Family Fund Charity Concert at Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, Rhode Island. The charity event marks the fifth anniversary of the Station Nightclub tragedy in Rhode Island, the fourth largest nightclub fire in U.S. history. 100 lives were lost, 200 others were seriously injured and 65 children lost one or both parents. Five years later, funds available for the survivors are woefully inadequate. Only 15 survivors of the fire qualified for Social Security benefits, and many are still unable to meet their monthly needs. "It is sometimes, strange acts of unforetold tragedy that bring us together on a common ground," says recording artist Kevin Max, who with DC Talk sold over 8 million albums to date. "I look forward to being a part of this event because of the awareness it will build for the families involved." For Stryper's lead singer Michael Sweet, this event is even more personal. "I have a dear friend who miraculously survived the fire and he has certainly been an inspiration to me," says Sweet. "To be able to help raise funds and help support those who have suffered from this tragedy is a true honor. My heart, thoughts and prayers continue to go out to all the families, friends and loved ones involved and I'm grateful to be a part of such an event." The Station Family Fund, founded by survivors, family members and community members affected by the fire, and the Wake Up To Love Foundation, founded by Tesla drummer Troy Luccketta, are the event organizers. While $100,000 was raised in 2005 from a benefit concert featuring Tesla, Shinedown, Pat Travers and Carmine Appice, those funds are in desperate need of replenishing. All proceeds from ticket sales and charity auctions benefit the Station Family Fund, a non-profit 501 (c)(3) charitable organization. The Station Family Fund is committed to providing survivor relief, including costs of ongoing treatment and rehabilitation. Additional artists scheduled to perform on February 25th include Carmine Appice’s SLAMM!!, Eric Martin (Mr. Big), Gary Hoey and drummer Danny Seraphine (Chicago). Other artists will be announced in the coming weeks. Organizers would like to acknowledge the incredible generosity of the Dunkin’ Donuts Center (www.dunkindonutscenter.com), whose management has graciously donated the venue free of charge for the charity event, as well as East Coast Lighting, WHJY and the many acts who are donating their time and talent to make this event possible.
Tickets are now on sale at Ticketmaster.com. Prices range from $39.00 to $59.00.

Caedmon's Call Grey's Anatomy Date Changed To Tomorrow NightGd
Caedmon’s Call’s lyrically compelling song about redemption, “Ten Thousand Angels” will receive a rare and lengthy place on an upcoming episode of the ABC hit drama series “Grey’s Anatomy” on January 10th. Featuring vocals by Derek Webb, the song will play for five consecutive minutes during an emotionally charged final scene. In order for the song to fit the length of the scene, an extra minute was even edited in, and with lyrics including ‘so lift up your heart now, to this unfolding, all that has been broken will be restored, here runs deep waters for all who are thirsty, love has come, love has come for you’, its use on one of television’s biggest shows is especially uncommon. “It’s an honor to be asked to help carry some of the emotional weight of a powerhouse show like Grey’s,” says Webb. “ I think the spiritual significance of a song like “Ten Thousand Angels” will have some really special chemistry with what is bound to be an important episode in the season.” "Ten Thousand Angels" is a bonus track on the group's current release, Overdressed, which was in the top 5 (no. 5) of iTunes Editorial list of 2007 for overall “Best Christian Albums”. For three days only, catch a sneak peek listen to “Ten Thousand Angels” at this link: tenthousandangels.mp3. Seventh Star Split
Some sad news from the Facedown camp on this Wednesday as we all lose one of their veteran bands. The following statement was issued by Seventh Star: "So, after nearly nine years of being a band, Seventh Star is breaking up. We’ve had three full lengths, hundreds of tour dates, seen the world, have made great friends, toured with some of our favorite bands/biggest influences and we feel it’s our time to move on. The main reason is different levels of dedication within the members. We are no longer all on the same page with how much of our lives are to be spent on the band. Some are personal reasons, others not. We feel we would rather go out on top than to fizzle out. We’ve always tried to give 100% in what we do. We’ve never been about the status, popularity, money or whatever passing trend is going around. We strived to play the music we wanted to and never back down from our message to speak to the Hardcore community about our Savior, Jesus Christ and God’s Grace. We’ve sacrificed time, money, relationships and college all because we believed in this. Sometimes it’s been trying, but always been where we wanted to be. At this point in time we can’t give 100% to the band and we are called to other areas of our life. We are playing a few final shows hitting some spots in Florida in January, playing one last show in Ocala, flying to our second home of Las Vegas, NV and playing our final show at this year’s Facedown Fest. Our original members Mike Whitaker and Shawn Douglas will be joining us to end the band. We want to thank Jason and everyone at Facedown Records for believing in us. We also want to thank all the bands we have toured with and everyone who has ever supported us in any way. You know who you are. NEVER LOSE HEART."

The Myriad Did It
If you've been keeping up with them via this enewsletter, you've already rejoiced with us that The Myriad won the whole MTV/Mountain Dew contest. They're going to be huge now. Good thing we decided to jump on the bandwagon early. Look for some intense coverage of the band in our March/April issue. MTV2 has announced KOCH Record’s Seattle-based alternative rock band The Myriad as winner of the 2007 “MTV2 Dew Circuit Breakout.” The Top 3 Finalists were flown to New York City to perform during the Dew Circuit Breakout Finale, LIVE from MTV’s TRL studio in Times Square, where The Myriad was announced as the winners. The band was immediately thrown back on stage to star in their very first MTV music video for “A Clean Shot” for on-air rotation on MTV and MTV2. In addition, they'll grab some air time on Discover & Download and Unleashed, where the latest, most anticipated, most cutting-edge work from the biggest players in rock and hip hop premiere on MTV2. The Myriad’s songs are also slated for inclusion in the red-hot video game “Rock Band,” published by MTV Games, distributed by Electronic Arts Partners as downloadable tracks, and available for Xbox 360 and PS3. In the past 4 years the 'Dew Circuit Breakout' has been running, previous winners and participants have garnered national exposure as well as success in the music industry. Past Dew Circuit Breakout alumni include Taking Back Sunday, Yellowcard, Hellogoodbye, Halifax and Thursday. To feed the band’s fast growing fanbase, KOCH has rush-released a special digital EP Prelude To Arrows, that includes five songs plus a special bonus track as a sneak preview of the upcoming album. Prelude To Arrows is available online at iTunes, Rhapsody, and other digital services. A limited edition CD version is also available on the band’s website at themyriad.net. Drawing rave reviews from fans and critics worldwide, The Myriad’s music covers a diverse panorama, evoking comparisons to The Verve, Radiohead, U2 and The Who. In their quick emergence, the band has already performed with Blindside, Mute Math and The Beautiful Mistake. The Myriad's first full length record, You Can't Trust a Ladder was featured as a Staff Favorite on iTunes (alongside the White Stripes and the Foo Fighters) and MTV has used some songs off the record for the Real World Denver show. Backed by a new label and armed with a hotly-anticipated new record, 2008 promises to be a landmark year for The Myriad. The Myriad’s forthcoming album, With Arrows, With Poise was recently mixed at Hansa Studios in Berlin, Germany by Michael Ilbert (The Cardigans, Kent, The Hives) and mastered at historic Abbey Road Studios in London, England by Adam Nunn (Air, Radiohead, Franz Ferdinand, George Martin, Mogwai). Just off of a sold-out national tour with The David Crowder Band, The Myriad is made up of Jeremy Edwardson, John Roger Schofield, Steven Tracy, Jonathan Young and Randy Miller. In addition to their recent MTV success, the band has released a special limited edition EP, Prelude To Arrows, on October 9, 2007. The six-song EP will bridge the gap between the bands 2005's critically acclaimed You Can't Trust a Ladder and the highly-anticipated With Arrows, With Poise, coming on KOCH Records in Spring 2008.

Hear Caedmon's Call On Grey's Anatomy
“ I think the spiritual significance of a song like “Ten Thousand Angels” will have some really special chemistry with what is bound to be an important episode in the season.” The song "Ten Thousand Angels" is a bonus track on the group's current release, Overdressed, which was in the top 5 (no. 5) of iTunes Editorial list of 2007 for overall “Best Christian Albums”. For three days only, catch a sneak peek listen to “Ten Thousand Angels” at this link: inorecords.com/caedmonscall.

Third Day and Jars Of Clay Help A Dozen Villages
Third Day and Jars of Clay Raise $75,000 for Blood:Water Mission during the 12- City “Christmas Offerings Tour.” At least 12 entire African villages will now have clean water for a year as a result of money raised during Third Day’s 12-city “Christmas Offerings Tour,” with special guests Jars of Clay, which saw sell-out crowds in Houston, Tex.; Minneapolis, Minn.; San Antonio, Tex. and Madison, Wisc. Third Day and Jars of Clay played to well over 40,000 people during the 12-date run. Sharing about the impact that will be made from the support raised during the tour is Third Day’s Tai Anderson, “Knowing that each member of the audience during this tour represented an African that will soon be receiving clean drinking water gave the ‘Christmas Offerings Tour’ incredible significance. It is overwhelming to think of the support raised during a 12-city tour. All of us in Third Day have always been big fans of Jars of Clay’s music, and we now feel deeply connected to the band’s incredible, life changing mission in Africa.” Dan Haseltine, of Jars of Clay, provides further context around the importance of the mission. “There is something chronically hopeful about providing clean water for people in Africa. The effects of clean water are obvious in the health of a community, in the amount of children that can go to school instead of walk to get water, and in the empowerment of leaders in the community as they see how their ideas have made a difference; and yet there is so much more work to be done. We know that for every community that we celebrate their access to clean water, there are hundreds who still hang in the balance of life and death. The funds raised on this tour will support Blood:Water Mission, as we begin 150 new projects this year that will give clean water to thousands and thousands of Africans. Until the day comes when every African has access to clean water, we will continue our efforts, and will welcome the overwhelming feeling of gratitude toward those of you who have helped make this possible.” For more information on how to contribute to Blood:Water Mission, please visit: bloodwatermission.com.
