HM Exclusive: Jason Martin Interview
By Ben Matulich
Jason Martin has been one of the most innovative leaders of true underground music since the early nineties. He has been the leader of Starflyer 59, a band that continues to push the musical envelope on each release. I recently asked him a few questions.
Jason Martin is usually not one to say much during interviews, but he lets his music speak for himself. Jason has been involved with various musical projects in the last year including a collaboration with his brother Ronnie. The result was an album under the moniker "The Brothers Martin." Did I mention, that he also has a project with his wife Julie, they are called Bon Voyage. With one listen, you'll know Jason has something special.
What can fans expect on the next album?
I'm not too sure yet. We are about finished with the 7" series we are doing with Burnt Toast Vinyl, which has alot of first drafts of the songs that will be on the next record. I am still deciding what direction to take when we re record them for our new album.
What was it like finally making a formal album with your brother?
I thought it was fun, and I think a lot of cool songs came out of the process of doing a record together.
What is your view on the current state of the music industry?
Things are just a bit different than they were when I was growing up. I think that it is cool people can make some music in their bedrooms, get a myspace page, and have a way for people to hear their music without being signed to a record label. The flip side of that is bands have lost a lot of their mystery. When I was a kid you had to wait for a bands new record to come out to hear it, or search out the record stores to find a 7" that had a new song, or wait for a new magazine that might have some info on what your favorite band was doing between records. Obviously that is no longer the case, you can come across more info than you ever wanted to know, or find more songs than you ever wanted to hear etc. with a quick google search...Seems a bit harder these days to keep pople interested when they have so many choices.
The guitar in Neon Horse sounds familiar, any thoughts?
Who is Neon Horse?
Thanks for the interview, Jason.
