Dog the Bounty Hunter
Lee Haley, our old Marketing Director is a dear friend that understands the historical signifigance of Randy Rhoads' guitar playing, and is obviously a good friend. He loves to write, so it's always a joy to give him an assignment. He's been chasing this Dog the Bounty Hunter interview for over a year now, and it finally came to pass this Fall. We knew it would be cool; but who would've guessed that there'd be an amazing lesson on repentance and mercy in this thing? Following is the uncut interview that well exceeded the limited space of our print magazine. Enjoy (and comment afterwards)...
(Lee) For those of our readers that don't know exactly how the Bounty Hunter process works--you guys put up the money, it's kind of like an insurance policy, right?
(Dog) Well, that's in bail bonds. A bounty hunter goes after anybody who there is a warrant for, and he's got to have a warrant, and of course he's got to have a bounty--which is the reward. I work with the bail bonds, you know, to catch those guys, but we also bounty hunt fugitives. See, in every state, Lee, there is a law that's called the citizen's right to arrest. You as a citizen may arrest someone if you know that they've committed a felony and/or are committing a felony in front of you. So, I've taken that citizen's arrest act, which is in every state in America, and made a living out of it. See what I mean?

Which came from, you know, back where Billy the Kid was. He was a bounty hunter, too. That's exactly what he did, so I pattern my job and my life after guys like that, where your bail enforcement officers they just got after bond jumpers, guys that have been out on bail. Where a bounty hunter goes after anybody who is wanted on a felony and, of course, again who has a bounty. You can't go out there, spend all your money that day finding him, without getting paid, you know what I mean?
Of course, you've got a family to feed and, what, nine kids?
Twelve. (pauses) And there are a lot of expenses too, brother. You pay for gas, food, and snitch money. It costs a lot of money to catch the guys, you know what I mean?
Sure! Now your family is all pretty much involved in the Bounty hunter process, is your daughter Baby Lisa still involved?
Yes, she's in Denver right now with Beth, they are doing some hunting there.
Great! All those guys, I mean I don't know how to ask this, but are they all Christians, or are some of them not?
All the boys are. Every single one of them are. I mean I raised them so every single one of them pray, and are Christians and believe in the hereafter and, you know, try not to sin blatantly, and they are all my kids--you know what I mean? So they all pray and they all have children and they all love God and all my kids go to church. One is in jail--he ain't in church but probably every Sunday (laughs). They all know the ways of the Lord, you know what I'm saying--Baby Lisa especially.
Good! That's good! You know, you start watching the show and you see all of them praying and stuff, and it's amazing. I mean, you've got to get in there and fight, because you've got to come out of there alive, but afterwards their attitude towards these people, it blows my mind--such love and compassion and I think that a lot of people notice that.
Yeah, I'm glad, Lee. You know, Leland the other day said my friend, and I said, "What friend?" and he said, that one I arrested."
Laughs!
I mean, they have compassion those kids. I mean, they know it could be one of them, Lee. If not for the Grace of God, they know it could be them.
In my opinion right now, A&E seems to be one of the best networks out there. How does it feel to be involved with them, or do you not care to comment?
I want to comment, Lee, please-okay? We have never felt closer to family than we've ever felt with A&E. We have a new president named Abby Raven, a female, and she has the compassion right now that this country needs, not only in the president's seat but in television, and I'm just like you--I am amazed with A&E right now, and we are very proud to be leading the pack and be the family that we have at A&E. They are not paying us enough, but you know, please put that in there, too. No, they are not paying like the big networks do, but with the big networks you can't say "in Jesus name," and you can't say the prayer, and you know.
That's right!
A&E said, "Whatever you want to do as long as you don't break the law, Dog, were filming it!"
Yeah and you're like, "well, don't worry about that (laughs)."
(Laughs), right, right.
Let me ask you another question off the cuff. How did Ozzy get involved with your theme song?
Sharon Osbourne's blood brother is David Arden. David Arden is mine and Beth's very good friend. You know, we've been doing television stuff for like 15 years--you know, documentaries, and what is a bounty hunter, and all that, and David was like the guy that I would go to ask questions about Hollywood--you know what I mean? And when I started the show I thought, who all of all people would be better that the Prince of Darkness to sing Dog the Bounty Hunter. So I asked David would you go ask Ozzy, and Ozzy said "you know what? I like him, I like what he does, I'll take the time and I'll do it." It was just a blessing from God that he did it. He's a very decent guy, and he's drug free now for over two years. When the Osbourne's show came out the reality show, it kind of spawned in my heart the show, cause if it wasn't for them there wouldn't be any reality shows.
While names such as Andrew Luster (Max Factor cosmetics heir convicted of drugs and rape) and Wayne Scaterie (Murderer of Denver Disc Jockey Alan Berg) those are national criminals, I guess you're not limited on who you can capture?
No, no anybody we feel is wanted that we can go after, we can go after.

I've watched the show, and disagree with the cursing. Christians are supposed to be different, not the same as the world. I know we sin, and are not perfect, we have to live in the world, not live like the world. God Bless, and Jesus Saves!
I agree with Mike..We need to be seperate from the world. Though we are in the world we are not of it! Gods grace is real but not to be tampled on. He can disern the intent of the heart and we have the strength in Him to over come anything. Amen...by the way love the show.
Although there are several elements I like about Dog, his philosophy, and the show, I don't agree with his idea behind using God's name in vain. When we say "God damn it," we are associating an action with God, an action we do not know if He supports... condemning someone. And even if we're not meaning it as a condemnation, we have to considering the attitude or outlook we have on a person or a situation when we say it... are we saying it in hatred and non-righteous anger, or are we saying it in love?
Taking the Lord's name in vain is claiming to be a Christian and then not living it out.
Dog shouldn't say "God damn it" because of this very reason...it just gives people reason to talk and discredit his faith. I would suggest that he look into the teaching of how to handle "the weaker brother". But other than that we ought to be ashamed of judging him.
If my life was in danger like his, and the lives of my loved ones, I'm pretty sure that some colorful language would come out during those highly stressful situations. Give the guy a break, in Jesus Name!

In the words of Daniel son..."Don't want no potty mouth" I see where all you guys are coming from, but the only problem with having a potty mouth is that you tend to have a very limited vocabulary. Not that I don't say junk I shouldn't say, but its always good to attempt to have higher standards. I'm not sure what would work as a bounty hunter because I am not one. I like the article though. I found it interesting!
Great interview. Absolutely interesting. There is so much compassion and love coming from this man - watch the show. And all you guys can comment on his cussing. Sounds like some good old fashion Pharisee action going on.

I was suprised that HM interviewed him. I am glad he was interviewed. I know that cussing and smoking might be frowned upon by Christians. And yes we should not cuss or smoke. But we should not over eat and gossip either, but we do. God knows our heart, we must strive to live for Him.
I enjoy Dog's show and how he and the other bounties show compassion on the scum or down and out. We should do the same.
I love your show. You are not only doing your job but changing the world one capture at a time. God will truly bless you and your family. Keep fighting the war against drugs. It was wonderful for you to talk to those young children about the consquences of ice, we need more people in this world like you. And just wanted to say that Leland just takes my breath away! Dog & Beth.great show and great things you are doing for people who are still burdened down with listening to Satan and his lies. Beth you are a beautiful women but your mouth ruins everything...young girls see you pray and then act like a man..not good. I'm a Christian and please be careful using our Lords name in vain making the world think that we can be like them when we are angry or pumped up with adreniline. I feel that dog is justifying his actions that he knows is wrong. I say this because I was the same way, it doesn't matter how much good you do, all it takes is a moment of weakness and a slip of the tounge to turn somebody away from Christ. Lead by example dog it is not in the slang.
We should just let the show (Dog The Bounty Hunter) be what it is, without over-analizing it. Some people are fans, some aren't (I am ~ especially of Leland!). At least it's making a difference in this world, instead of focusing on superficial things.
To the Chapmans ~ great job! Keep it up, you are changing the views of North American people (I'm from Canada, and I love the show!) in a positive way....and never compromize what you've already accomplished to make the show #1 ~ it already is.
Great show! I think that Dog's methods are a lot like God's. He pounds them when he has to but there is always grace behind the punishment and consequences. Keep up the great work and thanks for the interview.
I am so saddened to see such nonsense with regards to swearing. Are any of you stone thrower's a bounty hunter ? You can relate to this experience and therefore throw your critism to the wind? It makes me sick. We are all sinners. I can't stand the immaturity and naivity of weighting sin. Stop it. Dog, his wife, his family do the best at what they do. If any of you would see through your superficial nonsense, and building yourself up, you might see things a bit differently. God Bless Dog, his family, and thanks to A & E for the show.
I would say if you're offended by the cussing, like, uh, don't watch the show. I think as Christians we need to be different in the sense of being aware that it's the context in which cuss words are used and whether it's going to offend those around us that matters. It's the intent behind the words and the lack of sensitivity to someone else who may be upset by them (Christian or not) that's the problem. You could be just as aggressive to someone saying "oh darn it" or "forget you, man" and offend them with your attitude just as much as if you used Anglo Saxon "bad language". On Dog's show, the cuss words are bleeped, and in the environment he works in they don't seem to cause offence. Dog shows the people he apprehends a different attitude to what they're used to with the way he talks to them and treats once he's caught them. Who does more to promote true Christian behaviour to non-Christians, Dog, or extreme right wingers who appear to use the Bible and their faith as an excuse to yell at minorities or those they don't agree with, or to further their own agendas?
Yes this is an original and good show. I never expected to get to be a regular watcher, which I am. I am not a big backer of his personal views but as a citizen of the USA he is entitled to them. I particularly am impressed with his and Beth's true family values. Keep up the good fight and know that even those that think differently support you.

Baby Lisa is totally off the charts. She is extremely cute. If I was in the same location I would atleast try to date her, but I'm not. Too bad for me.
Duane and Beth show compassion and love to thier charges. They pray. The love the family shares is evident. I don't like it that other Christians sit back and judge other Christians. We don't need to that do we??? Sure they could clean up some, but can't we all???
As far as being Christians.. I say we do not have the right to judge the heart of others, so work on the beams in your own eyes rather than to complain about the specks in the Chapmans family. If you really think its "unchristian like" then get on your knees and pray for them, and knock off the critical spirit.
I want to compliment Dog and all his family on the best show on TV!! I watch it religiously so my husband became a fan without really meaning to. He is a principled and compassionate man like Dog. Half the time we are both leaking tears listening to all the good words you all say. We never miss a show. God bless you all.
To go out and attempt to capture a desperate fugitive is diffult enough, without putting silly restrictions like the language you use during the course of the arrest. What's the big deal?
If you can scare a guy into giving up by swearing at him, then that's a lot better than having to do him physical harm. Period!
