DISCIPLE LIVE
(With Poor Man’s Riches & Staple)

The War of Pranks
By Jerimy Spencer

I walked through the doors of the Lutheran church to be recognized with my guitar and amp in hands by Tyler, a man who works at the church for the concert events. He directed me to the "grub" room after I had paid my way and received my bracelet. I walked in mostly unnoticed as I rested my gear against a small ovular coffee table pushed to against the wall. I moved straight ahead further behind chairs and two long tables to come up behind Brad Noah and wrap my soldiery arms around his neck in a choke hold. Kevin was sitting at an adjacent table watching as I came in for the kill. I quickly moved around and said hi with some comments coming from Mr. Noah about my hair getting longer. I moved over and gave Kevin a sturdy handshake and a long over due, friendly greeting since the last time we had met in October.

My first order of business came with an introduction of a few relics from the old regime in Iraq. Starting with a an Iraqi soldiers hat with an Arabic military pin on it, one coin with Mr. Hussein's face, one language guide for U.S. Troops (which would have a few bizarre verbal phonetic rambling interpretations courtesy of Mr. Noah), one topographic map of Africa (used by my brother, LPC Jacob Spencer), and one Cuban (Romeo e Julieta) cigar. I entertained Brad and Kevin by playing a horrendously out of tune version of "Bohemian Rhapsody" on a neglected piano in the "grub room". It only lasted a few lines as it was harsh on the ears. It didn't stop Kevin from chiming in a bit with some classic rock crooning. The last bit of business was handing out like Iraqi coins to all the guys to which great gratitude was returned. From there on I spent time in the bus watching at least one of the guys playing some resurrected old school games on a PS2, as well as a London version of grand theft auto by Brad. Later Kevin would try his best to give me a sample of some of the new material for the upcoming Disciple album. While his discman did not take to this rough copy, I for the most part, was able to hear their song in tribute to the men and women in the United States Military service... which was inspired and requested by a letter from my brother while he was in Iraq. I got through a good portion of the song, but the discman would not let me have the whole. Nonetheless it had the makings of a very cool song. Before I left the bus Brad and I discussed music, from Tourniquet to the Elms.

What would come to my attention is that this "Fundamentals of Rock" tour was now ending. The other hometown band "Staple" with "Poor Man's Riches" of Kentucky would partake in a traditional prank war that night. I would be lying of I wasn't some how involved in this sadistic, and joyous hazing. From what I could tell, it started for me when I was standing by Brad, Kevin, and Joey as they took a mic at the soundboard and relentlessly sent "messages" to the other bands through their monitors. With Pour Man's Riches, they would just scream, yell "Quiet Riot!!", or say silly things that kept the drummer from just short of falling off his drum stool. Most of this was unbeknownst to the crowd. The singer was incredible as he took it with a strait face. Some where in between lyrical lines of a serious song Brad would add his lyrical silliness as he sang his own words to the song... that was fairly audible even in the back of the crowd. As that concert set progressed I found myself with Brad holding the mic to his clasped hands as he added "sound effects" to the song that was playing. As Brad and I gave a flatulentistic addition to the current performance the others where hurling paper balls and whatever else they could find onto the stage. The hazing was terrific, and even included such things as on stage processions as some of the guys with drums and tambourines in their hands dancing from one side of the stage to the other. Kevin jumped on the back of one of their guitarists too. Disciple's time would come soon.
