In defense of Pat Robertson

I would call that “lending a helping hand” and doing something practical (as opposed to just sitting there and casting judgement). So, while the statement Pat Robertson made (which might’ve been expected and “listened for” by critics) might be ill-timed, uncalled for and quite unwise; the overall criticism that Robertson is doing nothing to help out doesn’t hold a lot of water for me.

pat robertsonI choose to refrain from politics in this blog as much as possible, because it is so polarizing. Music is what unites most of us, and faith in Christ unites many of us even deeper. I follow lots of people on twitter, including some other media outlets, etc. Many of these people, of course, probably differ in political opinion from myself. I read one such tweet (from a media person I happen to like) the other day. It quoted Pat Robertson saying that Haiti had made a pact with the devil. Then it was followed by the sharp jab: “Thanks for always being there with a helping hand” (or something like that).

My thoughts are two-fold:
One, criticism is good. Not everyone sees everything from the same angle. It helps us to hear differing viewpoints on things. It helps us grow. Multiple voices and opinions (in the forms of committees) can make things slow down in terms of decisions, of course; but in the arena of public opinion, sometimes a negative criticism like this can be helpful. What this person is probably sensing, which I can agree on, is the timing and context of such a statement. I did not hear what Pat Robertson said, but he invariably talked about the country of Haiti and how some rather dark religious practices take place there (like voodoo, witchcraft, Siteria, etc). The inference is that God has pronounced judgment or withheld protection from a country that would openly serve other gods. While this could possibly be true, it might not be the case. If it is not the case, then the damage to the reputation of God and His people could be large. Picking on someone when they’re down or casting blame on the victims due to their lifestyle choices can certainly come off as uncaring. There are times where blaming a victim (an alcohol abuser, for instance) can be tough but loving truth that should be communicated, heard and acted upon.

I’m not too proud of some of the religious leaders that have gone on record shortly after some recent disasters and suggested that God was doing this as part of a judgment. I happen to take these sorts of things seriously, so if it were up to me I’d make darn sure that God was saying such and such before I opened my mouth and stated it as such. The harsh standards over biblical prophets was a sobering, cautious and good thing in terms of not playing around with God’s Word. (You know, the whole false prophets will be stoned to death sort of punishment)…

CBN’s Operation Blessing International has a relief team on the ground in Haiti.

Bill Horan, president and chief operating officer of the charity aid organization, says relief supplies are on the way to the devastated nation.

“We actually have a container, an Operation Blessing container, sitting at the port in Port-Au-Prince,” he told CBN News on Wednesday. “It was waiting to clear customs with $2 million worth of medicines that we were giving to Partners in Health.”

“Also, we have a four-wheel drive land cruiser that we were going to use for our company vehicle that has a winch on the front of it and armor-plating underneath it,” he continued. “It’s specially jacked up real high, so we can go through all the big potholes and so forth that are there anyway. But now, I’m not quite sure how we’re going to get around, but we’re on the job.”

Secondly, I think to myself, ‘You know what? I bet Pat Robertson and his organization have donated large sums of money immediately to relief aid. I bet the man himself has given funds personally. Since the journalist who made this 140-character statement did not mention any fact-checking in his indictment that Pat Robertson was only giving criticism as his “helping hand” gesture, I’ll see what I can dig up with a google search…

PAt R was Time’s man of the year flashing the Satanic sign of the lions paw on the front cover. He does the devils work and why would anyone focus on him as an issue when Hitlers in the drivers seat????

The big reason there was such an uproar against Pat Robertson’s statement is because the subject of a God who judges is very taboo.
Anyone who dares mention a Creator judging his creation in rebellion against him is scorned and rejected by the rebel’s who are in firm control.
If they faced this truth they would have to change their lifestyles and accept there is an Authority greater than theirs.
This they will never do until the judgment seat of Christ when they will finally bend their knee to the one and only true Authority,King Jesus.
Then it will be too late to repent and turn away from their evil ways

I’ve watched this guy, and have noticed his hand in formed in the sign of the devil, whilst “praying”. this man is evil and a part of the Illuminati-types. He is phony, and deserves no respect. If you want to follow this creep, go ahead, it’s still a free world, I guess. People should be more discerning, always question.

There are many warnings of judgments given in the Word of God, all men are subject to these judgments, because all are of sin. To ignore what God has said will not absolve anyone from judgment, that all are appointed to. It does not matter what angle we see from in what God does, He does all in righteousness working His will to bring about the completion that He has decided. If you can not see that God is the only power working all things, you would be wise to apply more times to study in His Word. Don’t be deceived by the foolish doctrines from the religions of men that care not for the Truth. So many disregard the FACT that Christ, THE TRUTH, is the only way to God, it does not matter what we’ve been taught.

Amo 3:5 Can a bird fall in a snare upon the earth, where no gin is for him? shall one take up a snare from the earth, and have taken nothing at all? 6 Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done it?

Luk 13:1 There were present at that season some that told him of the Galilaeans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2 And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered such things? 3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. 4 Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem? 5 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

Pat Robertson has no credibility. An estimated worth of $200 million to 1 billion, which can’t be accurately figured due to his not being open about his finances. This is all money sent in by people DONATING their hard earned incomes.

He speaks in tongues and channels god. He flies in a private jet and drives in expensive chauffeured limos. These are not things someone living on DONATIONS should be allowed.

He’s living it up, while asking little old ladies and everyone else to TITHE.

Pat Robertson says Haiti has been dealt the hand of God because a couple of leaders made a pact with Satan. You can’t find any credible information about this. And even so, would God judge a nation for one mans deeds?

The postings I’ve read all appear to have their concerns and (valid) criticisms of Pat R.
I have my concerns as well.
My focus in not on Pat, but rather how I would talk to “non-Christians” who will likely use Pat R. as their latest excuse to stay away from Christianity.
The best example would be to quote Ravi Zacharias – and I’m not sure if he was actually quoting someone else when I heard him say: “Never judge an ideology (religion) by the abuse of its followers… (R.Z. went on to say) Judge Christianity on the merits of its’ founder – Jesus Christ.”
Wrong or right, I wouldn’t let the statements of Pat or any other “big name” take my focus of who and what it’s all about – Jesus Christ.

The very first comment by Pat Robertson concerning the Haitian earthquake “This could be a blessing in disguise.” was more disturbing and did not sound correct coming from a fellow Christian. I know he was referring to improving Haiti. But what a price to pay!

Really who cares how much his organization donates. The money itself was donated to his organization from folks that believe the Roberston doctrine or Swaggart or Roberts doctrine. You know the kind of religious zealots/hucksters that tell the flock from the prayer tower that god will take them if they don’t raise millions or the ones praising god on Sunday and driving around with hookers and whiskey on Monday. Somehow I don’t think Jesus would approve…

Many people claiming to know that Robertson’s statement is untrue, are basing their opinions on as little as – or maybe even less than – what he is basing his opinion on. They are casting down his claim as “false” based on nothing other than the implications of the claim itself. This is illogical.

People are upset at this comment because it’s totally contrary to the way God was revealed to us through Jesus. To those of us who believe in this revelation, God is love. To Pat – He’s a mean, insensitive, arbitrary, cosmic idiot.

It doesn’t matter if Pat “may” have donated some money – because by the statement, he already showed he was uncaring, arrogant and insensitive.

Maybe Pat should have been worried that he and his followers were busy trying to lavish themselves in worldly goods and ignoring the Haitian people – allowing their country to get to such a poor state of infrastructure and overpopulation – than what may or may not have happened 200 years ago.

Anyone remember Pat Robertson in 2004 saying God told him that Bush was going to beat Kerry in a landslide? How many times has the guy been wrong while claiming to speak for God? Whats it going to take for you to write him off. You know what Deuteronomy says.Where is the love in the mans comments. He gives Christianity a bad name.

Have none of you the biblical understanding that you can’t talk about another believer the way you are about Pat?

Even if you don’t agree with him or his doctrine/theology, ministry, bank account or public statements, scripturally, you can’t talk about another the way you are.

As “believers”, you should know this…

  18. Ugh had this to say on January 20, 2010 | Permalink

Yes, yes you can. You are SUPPOSED to call those who promote false doctrines out. You are SUPPOSED to let the truth be known.

Read the words of Paul sometime.
